Quanzhou City is nestled against the mountains and faces the sea. Its terrain consists mainly of mountains and hills, with the northwest being higher than the southeast. The city has a subtropical maritime monsoon climate, characterized by abundant sunlight and heat, plentiful rainfall, and a warm, humid climate. Quanzhou is one of the first batch of National Historical and Cultural Cities and was designated as the inaugural “East Asian Capital of Culture.” Its history dates back to the Zhou and Qin dynasties. In the third year of the Yong’an era of the Wu Kingdom during the Three Kingdoms period (260 AD), Dong’an County was established. During the Tianjian era of the Liang Dynasty of the Southern Dynasties (502–519 AD), Nan’an Commandery was established with its seat in Quanzhou. In the second year of the Jingyun era of the Tang Dynasty (711 AD), the name was changed to Quanzhou. In 1986, the Jinjiang Prefecture was dissolved, and Quanzhou was established as a prefecture-level city. Quanzhou is a national-level Minnan Cultural Ecology Protection Zone, the birthplace of Minnan culture worldwide, and a region rich in Minnan cultural heritage. It is the birthplace of Southern Shaolin martial arts, as well as a nationally renowned hometown of overseas Chinese and the primary ancestral home of Han Chinese compatriots in Taiwan. Quanzhou boasts a thriving fishing industry and port economy and served as a key hub on the ancient “Maritime Silk Road.” Since the launch of reform and opening-up, Quanzhou has forged a path of economic development distinctive to a hometown of overseas Chinese, creating the “Quanzhou Model.”
